PREDASECT
HOUSE

a shelter for predatory insects

Further restrictions will come into force regarding the use of crop protection products in the coming years. The demands placed by the market continue to intensify and gaining authorisation to introduce PPPs on the market is becoming more complex. Yet these products, in combination with natural predators, are crucial to the success of the effective crop protection strategies needed to produce high quality fruit. Integrated pest management – which involves protecting natural predator populations – will have to evolve further. PredaSect House will help accelerate this development.

What is the PredaSect House?

PredaSect House is a specially developed ‘home’ constructed from a bundle of tonkin canes. It has been designed to encourage predatory insects to develop good populations in fruit orchards. The idea behind PredaSect House was sparked by experiences all over the world with ‘insect hotels’. These ‘hotels’ have been available for many years. It is clear that predatory insects mainly use bamboo canes as a shelter, and prefer bundled canes.

PredaSect House has some 30 entrance holes, and many openings between the canes in which the predatory insects can hide and shelter. This creates a minimum of 15,000* holes for predatory insects per hectare. The horizontal alignment of the PredaSect House prevents rain from entering. The shelter has been drilled and woven together to create a sturdy construction that will last for years. The PredaSect House will attract beneficial predatory insects to your orchard and encourage them to stay. *with 500 shelters per ha

Beneficial predatory insects

Earwigs, ladybirds, arachnids, assassin bugs and lacewings in particular are highly useful weapons in the battle against harmful enemies such as aphids, mites and pear psyllids. So take care of them!

Shelter/hibernation

PredaSect House is a perfect way to attract higher populations of beneficial predatory insects to orchards and encourage them to become long-term residents. The earwig is a nocturnal insect that likes to hide in trees during the daytime. However, today’s ‘sterile’ pear orchards do not offer enough of these suitable habitats. In autumn, lacewing larvae and ladybirds go in search for a place to hibernate. PredaSect House is the ideal solution. PredaSect House is also a perfect shelter for other predatory insects (hoverflies, velvet mites and arachnids) in summer and winter.

Dual purpose: shelter and bee hotel

PredaSect House can function as a shelter as well as a bee hotel for mason bees. Condition is that PredaSect House needs to be exposed to sunlight for most of the day, as is the case in young plantings.

How to use

PredaSect House is ready to use and easy to attach in the orchard to the lower part of the trees or to the supporting structure. Recommendation : 250 - 500 shelters per hectare.

The benefits of predasect house are

  • it allows you to minimise the annual number of insecticide treatments
  • it fits perfectly in the integrated pest management (IPM) concep
  • it is ready to use and simple to attach
  • it is long-lasting for a low price per hectare per year
